There’s something we’ve always liked about the rhythm of the farm. Nothing here runs the same way in January as it does in July, and we’ve learned to work with the season rather than against it. It’s got us thinking about the other rhythms we tend to ignore, the monthly ones that shape how we feel, what we need, and how much we’ve got to give on any particular day.
Why rituals matter
A ritual doesn’t have to be elaborate to be worthwhile. It’s really just a signal to yourself that a certain kind of care is coming, and that you’re allowed to take it. Athletes have pre-race routines, gardeners have the first coffee before the first job of the day, and many of us could do with something similar built around our monthly cycle: a set of small, repeatable habits that make space for however we’re feeling that week.
The value isn’t in any single ingredient or product. It’s in the consistency. When a routine is familiar, it takes less energy to keep up, and that matters most on the days when energy is exactly what’s in short supply.
Building your own ritual
There’s no single template here, but a few starting points tend to work for most people:
- Rest, properly. Not just sleep, but permission to slow down without guilt when your body is asking for it.
- Warmth. A hot water bottle, a bath, a blanket on the sofa. Simple, but reliably grounding.
- Gentle movement. A short walk or stretch can feel more restorative than pushing through a full workout.
- A consistent daily habit. This is where something like our organic full spectrum CBD oil might sit for some people, not as a fix for anything, but as one small, steady part of a wider routine, the same way a morning cup of tea or a vitamin might be.
- Nourishing food. Simple, warm meals rather than anything complicated.
None of these need to be done perfectly or in order. The point is building a small collection of things you reach for automatically, so you’re not having to think it all through from scratch every month.
What the endocannabinoid system actually is
You may have heard the term endocannabinoid system (ECS) mentioned in relation to hemp and wondered what it actually refers to. In simple terms, the ECS is a signalling network found throughout the human body, made up of receptors, enzymes, and naturally occurring compounds called endocannabinoids, which the body produces itself.
The ECS was only identified by researchers in the 1990s, relatively recently in scientific terms, and study into exactly how it works is ongoing. What’s understood so far is that it plays a role in regulating a wide range of everyday bodily processes, and that hemp-derived cannabinoids like CBD are of interest to researchers precisely because they interact with parts of this same system.
We think that’s a genuinely fascinating bit of biology, whatever your relationship with hemp products. It’s also worth remembering that research in this area is still developing, and there’s a good deal we don’t yet know.
Making it yours
The best ritual is the one you’ll actually keep. Start small, notice what genuinely helps, and let it evolve. Some months will call for more rest than others, and that’s entirely fine. Building a routine that adapts with you, rather than expecting yourself to fit a fixed plan every time, tends to be far more sustainable in the long run.
As part of our own daily rituals, many of us on the farm keep a bottle of organic hemp oil in the cupboard. If you’re curious, you can find our full range [here].
