At Hempen, we host those who live locally to us for the day, or for up to a week if you’re visiting from afar. We are based near Reading, Oxfordshire.
Since we started back in 2015, Hempen has always been supported by people volunteering their time. It’s a wonderful way to meet new people on a similar journey, exchange information, to connect, and share our passion for all things hemp. We like to think it’s also a way of making organic hemp more accessible, too!
We are a not-for-profit social enterprise, run as a worker’s co-operative. You’ll be asked to get stuck in with us, pitch your tent next to the wonderful woods or bring along your own live-in vehicle. Come cook lunch with us, potter about the farm and lend a hand.

VOLUNTEER TESTIMONIALS
“We have enjoyed seeing things gradually grow from being a tiny seed to a completely enormous plant and enjoyed the team (Brenda, Sophie, Dan and Tom) who worked really hard with us. It was a real pleasure and they were so helpful. We also loved how much fun it was watering them and learnt a lot about gardening and top tips to help us.”

“Growing Solidarity is a project offering land access and resources to asylum seekersI got involved because I was able to connect with nature and other people especially during lock down.I enjoyed growing my own green vegetables and I learned a lot about plants. Also I enjoyed joining the community on Apple Pressing day.”

“I have found solace volunteering at Hempen through the warm welcome received on site and the expert knowledge shared from the process of growing hemp and key gardening skills which I have been applying in my own garden.I enjoy the care given to the volunteers as I am looked after and all the activities which help to engage the soul with nature."

“An oasis of the hemp enthusiast, my four day volunteering at Hempen was brief yet colourful and an eye-opener for what they stand for.May Hempen grow to be the beacon of light for the best hemp producer in the coming future, and my best wishes to all at Hempen.”

About Us
Hempen began as an idea – to form a resilient rural community centred around the cultivation of hemp. We’d heard that this miracle plant could do so much, clothe us, house us, fuel us, feed us and heal us. So we wanted to practically work with hemp in a holistic, ethical and regenerative way.

Grow Hemp Campaign
If you’re from a bit further afield then stay over for a few days. We are limited on accommodation, so winters can be tricky if you’re not in your own live-in vehicle. When the sun shines, camping is beautiful here. You can get stuck into our flow and get involved with happenings in the co-operative, from helping in production to lending a hand around the farm!

Growing Solidarity
On Wednesdays, we run our community outreach project, Growing Solidarity. If you’d like to take part and support people who face barriers to accessing the natural world, we’d love to hear from you. We are particularly keen to connect to people who are able to help others to get to the farm! If you have a car and can help to support it, give us a shout.
